Description

Penfolds Bin 389, also known as "Baby Grange," is a renowned Australian wine that showcases the classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. It is produced by Penfolds, one of Australia's most prestigious and iconic wineries, known for its commitment to crafting exceptional wines. Bin 389 is often referred to as a "baby" or "poor man's" version of Penfolds' flagship wine, Grange, as it offers a similar blend of grape varieties but at a more accessible price point. The wine is a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, with the exact percentages varying from vintage to vintage. The grapes are sourced from select vineyards across South Australia, including the renowned Barossa Valley and Coonawarra regions. In the glass, Penfolds Bin 389 typically displays a deep ruby or garnet color, hinting at its concentration and depth. On the nose, it offers a complex and enticing bouquet of blackcurrants, dark berries, plum, along with spice notes, cedar, and hints of vanilla from oak aging. When it comes to taste, this wine delivers a powerful and harmonious palate. It combines the elegance and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness and generosity of Shiraz. It presents flavors of black fruits, dark chocolate, mocha, and a touch of pepper, with well-integrated tannins and a long, lingering finish. Penfolds Bin 389 is often recognized for its exceptional quality, aging potential, and its ability to represent the best qualities of Australian red wine. It pairs well with a range of dishes, including roasted meats, hearty stews, grilled steaks, or mature cheeses.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR Darkened deep red NOSE Ample self-standing fruits already beginning to yield to other vinous intents ... Cola, grated chocolate and cappuccino dust bind with juniper, sage/rosemary spices. A flash of brown sugar and liquorice – not quite in the Marsala spectrum – instead, brandy impressions replaced by blood orange-rind (dehydrated/candied). Oak somewhat partially hidden, yet faint scents of cedar, pencil shavings and graphite lobby for further bottle maturation. Not the liberated scents of a beef sauce reduction, nor a complete charcuterie offering, yet singular notes of air-dried bresaola (bison) will suffice! Unabashed (Baby Grange) complexities. PALATE Instantly fresh and fleshy. Some overt single-varietal cabernet and shiraz fruits still sit separate - alongside those hybridised via the blend’s sojourn in barrel and bottle ...time will unite. Expected liquorice, stewed plum and blackcurrant fruits, with dark chocolate and mocha lurking in the background. Savoury and salivating – mouth-watering, succulent acidity. This acidity interplays with integrated, evolved tannins – coating the mouth and adding length. Yes, impressive length, with concentration, and a mandatory Bin 389 ‘sweet’ core; oak completely absorbed. Polished and refined.
