Description

Penfolds Max's Shiraz is a premium red wine produced by Penfolds, one of Australia's most renowned and respected wineries. It is part of the Penfolds Max's Collection, which pays homage to Max Schubert, the legendary winemaker who was instrumental in shaping Penfolds' winemaking legacy. Max's Shiraz showcases the distinct character and quality that Penfolds is known for. It is crafted using carefully selected Shiraz grapes sourced from vineyards across South Australia, including regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, which are renowned for producing exceptional Shiraz wines. In the glass, Penfolds Max's Shiraz typically exhibits a deep garnet or purple color, reflecting its concentration and depth. On the nose, it offers an enticing bouquet of ripe dark fruits, such as blackberries and plums, along with hints of spice, licorice, and subtle oak nuances. When it comes to taste, this Shiraz delivers a rich and well-structured palate. It showcases flavors of black fruits, dark chocolate, mocha, and black pepper, with velvety tannins and a balanced acidity. The wine's oak aging adds layers of complexity and a subtle vanilla undertone. Penfolds Max's Shiraz is known for its approachable yet refined character. It combines the generosity and fruit-forward nature of Australian Shiraz with the finesse and craftsmanship that Penfolds is renowned for. The wine can be enjoyed in its youth, but also has the potential to age gracefully over several years. Max's Shiraz pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roasted meats, grilled lamb, hearty stews, or gourmet burgers. Its versatility and balance make it suitable for both casual occasions and more formal gatherings.

Tasting Notes

Crimson, with a ruby luminescence at the rim. The varietally distinct aromatic spectrum invokes chocolate truffle dusting, white cherries, musk, red liquorice, fresh pomegranate, hibiscus, bread and butter pudding, cinnamon with savoury notes of caper and green olive. The mouthfeel is succulent with abundant freshness/energy. Cherries are consistent from the nose to the palate, as is liquorice, however in this instance the impression is more akin to Dutch liquorice. Saffron, coffee bean, sarsaparilla and cola creaminess add to the to the textural interest, almost certainly oak derived elements that soften and encapsulates the tannins.
